Race 4 Your Heart

Race 4 Your Heart

October 1st 2011 started out to be beautiful, but with gale force winds that forced our volunteers to take down our Gazebos from the park by the Locks. Skinner’s Restaurant was gracious enough to permit us to move everything indoors, so they truly saved the day!  J  We had our Greyhound coats and collars, etc, for sale on one side, and our wraps, fruit & veggie foods spread out on the other side of the building. We had many positive comments about how well organized it was, and how it was nice to have the different food options (either veggie options or a Skinner’s lunch) available for the volunteers and race entrants.

This year I decided to present someone with a special “Fast & Fearsome” award in memory of my dear Moe, who was my first rescued track Greyhound and crossed over to the Rainbow Bridge last year. Moe was entirely responsible for me deciding to start Hi-Speed Hounds Greyhound Rescue & Adoption Inc., and I will always miss my “gentle giant.” This award was proudly presented to Shirley Labossiere.

I would like to thank Steve Gajerski and Murray Rose for handling the timing, measuring out the race course, and to my husband Ron for ensuring every runner’s bib was handed in and that they had a medal around their necks. Ron also handled the registration desk and T–shirt sales. A special thank-you also to Dr. Bailey, who came out to offer adjustments to the runners after the race for a donation to HSH, and also for donating the beautiful finisher’s medals! Even Betty Miller came out to see her Greyhound coats being sold which she has been making for our rescued Greyhounds!

We could never have pulled this event off without our volunteers and I would like to thank: Ilona McEachern, Judy & Ray Starr, Lori Middendorp & Roger Dezan, Jake Fehr & Darlene Hnatyshyn, Paul & Cynthia Johnson, Brad McEachern, Tim Sullivan, Tara, Madeline & Shannon McCoy, Tracey Sys Venier & Wayne Venier, Charlane Kitching, Barry Edginton, Crystal Jorgenson, Mary & John O’Donovan, Sheena Rogister, and Shawn & Meagan Smith, for coming out and just helping to do whatever needed to be done. Thank you to Jean from “Loving the Feral Soul” cat rescue for taking a day off to volunteer for HSH, and also to Kim Gibson from A Doggie Spaw and Gaynor Bibby-Gibson for coming to help out and support us. Zesto’s Restaurant on Henderson Hwy even graciously provided us with three boxes of muffins and two cases of bananas!

Please forgive me if I missed anyone, and we’ll hope to see you again at next year’s Race for Your Heart!
