| Cal’s Sutherland (Malibu) DOB: May 9/08-Black female, 60lbs.Seems to show no interest in small dogs, but we do not think that she can live with cats - good with other Greys. Very, very sweet and sociable, and is always trying to play with the other Greys! Our foster Malibu has won our hearts. She is a very pretty, affectionate and well behaved greyhound. She has bountiful energy and loves to partake in most activities in the home and outdoors. She walks beautifully on a shorter leach and takes cues with ease. Malibu is also very intelligent and curious (she opens doors and quickly understands how things work), so her adoptive family will need to think a few steps ahead. It should also be noted that Malibu is very respectful of her environment, can tackle most stair cases and is fully toilet trained (she also has no trouble letting you know with a few quiet whines that she wants to “go”) . She’s a pleasure to have in our home and she will make a great addition to a loving family.

| Show Trent (Chief) DOB: April 10/08. This guy is hilarious, and definitely keeping me hopping. He is the sweetest, nicest boy, whose personality is really beginning to shine.Chief is curious about everything. He has learned stairs overnight and now can’t seem to get enough of them. He managed to sneak down my basement stairs, but was too scared of them to come back up and had to be carried (no small feat for a dog his size). This boy loves life and is exploring his new world with gusto. He adores people, and can’t get enough affection. He knows his name, and actually listens quite well.He is very confident and knows what he wants.Chief has figured out there is a whole new world outside of his crate, and no longer cares if he ever goes back into one. He is a good boy though, and will go with a little persuasion. He enjoys the company of the other Greyhounds, so at this point we are not sure if he could be an only dog. One thing is for sure though, he wants to be the apple of someone’s eye who is not gone all the time.Chief is a stunning boy.Chief will likely not be able to live with cats or small dogs, but he is great with his humans. |

I have 2 Greys (3years now) My female does not like to walk on leash. I end up dragging her most of the way.Not pleasant! I believe that she gets bored with the same walk, B/C when we go other places she walks better. I also know she walks perfectly when we walk with friends (Other dogs)I also have 3 cats. I’ve been thinking of a 3rd Grey. (They are like potato chips and I have enough couch space) I’m retired so I’m home alot and George and Gracie are the lights of my life (Along with my 5 grand kids)

Hi Heather
You are absolutely right about Greys and chips. Your Greys are lucky to have such a devoted and diverse family.
Contact Michaela at [email protected] to discuss available dogs and see if you can fill that open couch space.
Good luck, please contact the site if you have any more questions.

hi, I am a therapist and have used a medium sized labrabradoodle in my practice with excellent results. Given the the characteristics of the most amazing dog the Greyhound I am looking for one. They are intelligent, intuitive, and very loving/giving. These characteristics plus their calm demeanor are perfect for this type of work as well as being a family pet. I am single with grown adult children and my pets are in effect my children.
My question is: I rent a 1000 sq. ft condo on the ground level. I have access to grassland and trees that does not stop. My landlord is fine with another animal. My labrabradoodle does not shed and weighs 34lbs.She is extremely well trained and currently works with me 3 days a week.
I understand that ex-racing dogs can never go off leash, and therefore a priority is a fenced yard. I do not have this however I am a responsible pet owner would never leave the dog off leash or let them get past me if I opened the outside door. Am I being realistic in thinking I can have a greyhound without a fenced yard or is this my wishful thinking? We have two off leash parks 5 minutes away so leash exercise is available. Please help.

Hi Martina
I think the best person to talk to is Michaela at [email protected] or 219-4029.
She knows the dogs available for adoption better than any one and she can help you find a fit.
Good luck, please contact the site if you have any further questions.

this is for Martina, when I got my Greys 3 years ago, I didn’t have a fenced yard, I had an enclosed dog run but I had to walk them on leash to it.They were so good, and walked so perfectly that one night I got lazy, and just walked with them.Something caught Gracies eye and she took off across Academy Rd I died 1000 deaths watching her.I ran through the traffic to get her and decided to fence my yard. They get out of the house when delivery people come, when grandchildren come etc so I’m very glad I have the security of a fence, tho its not fool proof. The paperman was leaving the gate open so i always check b/4 I let them out. You can do it(no fence) but it has to be absolute!!NEVER OFF LEASH!!!

Is Nikki, back in manitoba yet?
September 28th, 2010 at 12:04 pm
I just spoke with Nikki’s foster parents, and she will likely be coming in very soon. I just lost 2 of my Greys very recently, so I needed to get back to some semblance of normalcy before I could move forward with anything else.
Michaela.

Hi Michaela, my name is kenna leclerc, im ten years old and absolutley LOVE greyhounds. They are my favorite breed. Right now, as you may know, i am babysitting Bonnie. She is fantastic with our family. We have a rabbit in the house, but bonnie hasn’t yet smelled her or touched her. I also have a reptile in the living room, and bonnie does not care. Bonnie has not been eating, but we took her to our local baseball diamond with the rest of the greys as so as nikki, laura, olivia etc. She was fantastic with her muzzle. SHe ate and drank after. Ayla who is one of my best friends, her auntie said my family was very ideal for her. I do want to keep her, but unfortunately my dad is out of town. I check your website everyday. I will keep you in touch.

Hey, just thought I’d post on the website. We adopted “Danny” back last summer and he’s doing superb. My 6th Greyhound, but by far the most social. If it wasn’t for the 10 hour drive to Winnipeg (In Saskatoon), I’m sure we’d have gotten our second by now. Hopefully, this new batch brings with it many new personalities…
…Anyone’s Grey obsessed with cardboard boxes?

For our female (Impy) it is plastic.
Her favorites are DVD cases or plastic bottles in the recycling.

Exciting stuff!! I will hand in an application once I’m done reading Retire Greyhounds for Dummies! =D

Do you know which new arrivals are cat safe yet??
March 8th, 2011 at 8:28 am
Hi Stan
They are working through the new arrivals to determine who is comfortable around other dogs, cats or small dogs.
Please call Michaela at 219-4029, she can give you a good idea of where they are at and which dogs are cat-friendly.

I was talking to someone who knows a lot about dogs and she was very positive about the temperament of greyhounds. I have a smallish house so a whippet would probably be a better fit for me. Do you also get whippets for adoption or just greyhounds?
Thanks
March 15th, 2011 at 9:22 am
Hi Glenna
The rescue mostly finds homes for Greyhounds but on occasion we do help out with other dogs. You can check the website as we post any new adoptable dogs.
As the owner of 2 greys, one large and one smaller, don’t let the smaller house turn you away. For large dogs, a Grey can turn itself into the smallest ball, you will not find a more relaxed dog.
They are wonderful dogs and like any dog you need to find a personality match for you.
You should give Michaela a call 219-4029 and chat with her about your concerns, she can definitely let you know if there is a match.
Good luck, please contact the website if you have any further questions.

My husband and I live in a house less than 800 sq ft. and we have 3 dogs - two greyhounds from Hi-Speed hounds and a collie mix from D’Arcys Arc. The greys are amazing dogs. You have to remember that these dogs are coming from a situation where they may be kennelled for 20 hours a day. Just imagine how luxurious a small house would seem to them. Michaela is amazing when she matches dogs and homes. She also did a home visit the first time with us and she is more than willing to address any concerns you may have. And she will continue to be an ongoing resource to you
March 25th, 2011 at 8:33 am
Thank you Dodi for your response that a small house is OK for greyhounds and that it is certainly better than a small kennel.
Another question I have is about how common it is for greyhounds to escape out an open door. I had read that this can happen frequently. I have people coming and going and it is often difficult to ensure that a dog is secured if someone rings the bell unexpectedly. Thank you.
April 5th, 2011 at 3:51 pm
Glenna.
I have had 3 greyhounds and my third is as timid as they get and will not leave my side unless spooked. However, my other 2, especially my first one Bye, was always escaping and it is impossible to catch a greyhound unless you corner him. My best advice to you is to teach them to stand back or stay on their bed when someone comes to the door and that way you don’t have to worry about your dog getting out. It can be done.

I just wanted to say that “Ace,” or Dylan as we called him, is an amazing dog. We absolutely loved him, unfortunately because of allergies he had to be returned. I cannot say enough on how amazing he is. He walk very well, and get excited when he sees his leash. He’s doesn’t jump and never pulls on walks. Is great in the car, and has wonderful singing voice if you get him going, and is just a joy to be around. Enjoys toys, and absolutely loves to lay in the sun. Doesn’t seem to run very much, but will chase you if you run. He responses quickly to the word “hungry” and is very cautious when taking something from your hand. I can not express enough how much we’ll miss Dylan, but I know that he’ll make someone very happy.
-Sara
(One warning- he loves to lick!)
May 24th, 2011 at 8:58 pm
I have to agree with Sara. Ace is a greyt dog!! He’s staying with us(Joyride and I) for now.
He walks like a dream on a leash, just walk and he will follow. He was somewhat tentative when going down a long flight of stairs, but quickly mastered it; going up was not an issue, two giant leaps was all it took. He doesn’t run as much as Joyride on his own, but when he does run… Joy ride, a younger grey… cannot keep up with Ace!

We recently met Code Red (Cody) and my 12 year old son is definitely in love with him! (and the other 3 Greys in their family)I had never met a Grey before so didn’t know what to expect. We have a 7 yr old mixed breed female dog who I expect would probably get used to a new friend easily. I will contact Michaela directly for more specific info, but just wondered what the process was for adopting a dog while he is being fostered?
Thanks!
July 15th, 2011 at 7:26 am
That is great Joanne.
Michaela will be able to find a match for your situation, she is very good at reading Greys and knowing what their strengths are. She will talk to you about what you are looking for, once she finds a match she will setup a meeting for you and the Grey. Most fosters are great at helping out with prospective families and will work with you. Good luck.

Sara, I just want you to know that Ace(Dylan) has an amazing home with another young Grey for company. His owner is an active single guy who absolutely dotes on his Greys, and is truly a man after my own heart. I saw Ace about 2 weeks ago(we actually ran our Greys together)and he looks fantastic and is very, very happy. He honestly could not ask for a better home.

Hi there, I have a family member living in Winnipeg and will be travelling there in August. My son and I are interested in adopting a greyhound. He is nine and wonderful with animals. If you have any suggestions of a dog that is great with an attentive young boy, please let us know. We have a large yard and camp and spend a lot of time outdoors, no other pets. Thank you.

Hi there,
I was wondering if your organization does public appearances/meet and greets very often? I seem to recall meeting a few of the dogs outside of a pet-valu a couple of years back. If so, do you have anything planned for the near future? While I am not immediately in a position to adopt a dog, I have been reading a lot about retired racers with the intent to adopt in the future. Would be great to meet a few greys in person.
Second question… do you take in dogs as they are available or at certain times of the year? Are you expecting any new arrivals in the near future?
Thanks.
March 16th, 2012 at 10:12 am
Hi Jordan
Events pop up and the org gets involved. I don’t know of anything right away but I’m sure we will out and about.
Have you ever thought of fostering a new arrival greyhound?
I understand there is a plan for new greys to journey to Winnipeg. You can check with the website for new developments.

Hello…..I have been a dog liver my whole life. Growing up I also have had 1, 2 sometimes 3 dogs in our home. I currently own my own home….live in the city…have a 8foot fenced in double property. I am very interested in adopting a dog…..especially knowing I would be able to provide a loving home. I currently have a female brindle boxer cross bull mastiff who is my baby. She is fixed, loves people and children. I have 2 grandchildren who are 6 and 5 years old who are used to being around large dogs. I love the greyhound breed….they are beautiful creatures. I would love to adopt.
